Anjali Phadke's Portfolio
Chinese Powerpoint
During this unit, we were learning about family. We started this unit by learning words about specific people in my family. For example, we learned that older brother means gege. We also learned about characters for these words. For example, gege in simplified Chinese characters is 哥哥. We also learned about different sentence structures to explain who was in our family. Some sentences include 我家有四个人。This sentence means, I have 4 people in my family. Also in this unit, we learned about different words regarding careers. Some words include, gongren, yisheng, hushi, and xuesheng. These words mean, worker, doctor, nurse, and student.
Our first and most important rule was: It has to be a PowerPoint. This PowerPoint had to contain 8 slides. These slides include Title slide, General Info about Family, a self intro, 3 slides about my family members, new words slide, and a Works Cited slide. Each of these slides had to have a Chinese and an English translation. Regarding the New Words slide, we had to learn at least 3 new words during this project. There were 2 parts to this project. 1 was the physical PowerPoint and the other part was the verbal presentation. The 4 parts of the verbal presentation were fluency in Chinese, Q and A performance, Chinese pronunciation, and the overall presentation skills.
During this project, we had to learn at least 3 new words. The words that I used were da xuesheng (college student), gong cheng shi (engineer), and ke xue jia (scientist). I really struggled on remembering and correctly pronouncing these difficult Chinese words. I struggled in presenting my PowerPoint as well.
Practice makes perfect. These Chinese words really had me frustrated. I had to practice like 50 times before I got the words correct. Also, I asked my teacher for help with the words. I had practice with my PowerPoint at home. I set up the projector downstairs and timed/practiced my presentation over 10 times! It paid off with an A!
One aspect of this project was learning at least 3 new words. These words should be words that the teacher has not taught us yet. I thought that going on Yellow Bridge and searching new words was the best thing that I have learned. For example, my brother is a student. But I needed to learn a new word. So I looked up college student on Yellow Bridge and found the word, da xue sheng (college student). I also learned that gong cheng shi is engineer and ke xue jia is scientist.
In this day and age, English is not as good as it was before. New languages like Chinese and Spanish are taking the world by storm. Nowadays in the business world, if you are not bilingual, then you won’t get anywhere. So, it is important to learn Chinese. When I grow up, I want to become a doctor. Some of my patients may speak Chinese. Learning Chinese will make my patients excited and happy!
I used two qualities during this project. One quality that I used is creativity. PowerPoint lets you express your own personality. I grew in creativity because I could actually type in Chinese! This skill let me express my personality better because I had a different language to work with. I entered creativity on a new level! I also used the quality of communication. I communicated with my teacher Ms. Wang by asking her how to pronounce several Chinese words that I wouldn’t usually know how to pronounce on my own. We communicated through talking and writing. My definition of communication is using 1 or more senses to help out someone else. My definition of creativity is making something your own by adding Chinese into your own personality into the final product.
