Science Infographic

Throughout the unit, we learned about three systems that work well together which are the Digestive, Respiratory, and Circulatory system. These different body systems works together to finish the ultimate goal of getting energy/nutrients to the cells all over our body. Let me start out with the Digestive System. The Digestive System is a bunch of organs working to convert food into nutrients all of the cells in our body can use. Basically, we eat food through our mouth. It goes down the esophagus and to the stomach. One common misconception is that all food is digested in the stomach. Actually, only protein is digested in the stomach. Carbs and starch are digested in the mouth. The food now called chyme goes through the small intestine where nutrients are delivered. The villi in the small intestine suck up nutrients like a sponge and deliver them to the bloodstream. (This is where the circulatory system comes in). Then the excess waste goes to the large intestine where water is taken out. Then we excrete the waste.

The circulatory systems main job is to transport nutrients, oxygen and other things to the cells and carry away waste from the cells. So villi transport nutrients to the blood stream. From there the nutrients go to the cells. Then, there is a chemical reaction between glucose and oxygen which creates energy. Basically, a combustion process occurs to the nutrients and the molecules are broken down so that the cell can use them. The Circulatory system also transports oxygen to cells.

Then comes the Respiratory system. The main job of the Respiratory system is to get oxygen. When we get oxygen, it is transported to our alveoli in our lungs, then the oxygen gets diffused to our cells. We breathe and air goes down the pharynx. The air then goes to the lungs where oxygen is diffused into blood. The blood then diffuses the air into the cells. Now these three systems all support one idea. How can we get our cells energy? All of these systems have a part in the process of providing the substances necessary for getting energy to the cells.

Our body is a complicated form. I think people take for granted what really goes on. Kids need to know how we digest food, how we get energy, why we breathe harder when we are exercising, and so much more. Most kids would not really understand how these 3 systems relate. When people get a cold, do they automatically go to the doctor? No. A kid should really know about their body so that if they are sick, they can really understand why and immediately know what the problem is. For one, this project had to be creative and appealing in a visual way. Kids and parents needed to learn about this topic in a simplified and fun way but also in a visual way. My partner Makalia and I chose an info graphic. The main point of info graphic is to present info in an appealing way. As I have stated before, kids or even adults might not know what is going on in their bodies. The overall purpose was to teach people about the three systems of our body. Even though this was the main purpose, there was also a sub main purpose. Putting any random info on a poster and calling it off as a project is not good. The purpose of this project was also to learn about the systems and represent our knowledge on a poster to teach others.

The Digestion Project had to include a few key terms. Some of these terms included Saliva, Starch, Protein, Enzymes, Blood Vessels, Lungs, and so many others. One requirement of this project is: All terms/concepts were included. This is important because for people to learn, terms have to be included for people to understand what was going on. Another requirement is all the info on the project had to be scientifically accurate. This is important because we don’t want people to soak up the wrong info. Another requirement was the quality of the work. The product was to be exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout, and neatness. This is important because, if the product was cluttered and messy, then people couldn’t learn anything. The last requirement was use of time. Our groups had to work well with the time given and to not distract others. This is important because we didn’t want to mess up other people’s projects. Now the product we had to produce included all of these requirements.

The coolest thing I learned had to do with the Digestive System. When you eat carbs, they begin to get digested in the mouth! To get digested, enzymes in saliva that come from the salivary glands in your mouth digest the carbs and change them to glucose (sugar). It is truly amazing what the mouth can do with food! My biggest struggle during this project was the overall design of the project. We had to find a way to put out the accurate information in an appealing and creative way.

It all started when Mrs. Winzeler showed the class a PPT about info graphics. Shortly after, we made a 1st draft with all our colors and info. We got feedback and then made a 2nd draft. We got more feedback and made our 3rd and final draft. My partner and I worked very hard for 4 days, finally finishing our 3rd and final draft. Our final draft was an info graphic as I had said before. Think of a timeline. A timeline has dates starting with the beginning to the end. Our final poster was kind of like a timeline. There was three timelines. There was one timeline on the bottom that was straight, and there were two diagonal sides on the right and left side. The bottom was the circulatory system, the right side was the respiratory system and the left side was the digestive system. Circulatory was red respiratory was blue, and digestive was orange. Our final poster had pictures and even stickers! It was a very beautiful poster.

During this project, I used 2 qualities. I used Collaboration. Makalia and I had a job to do. We were to make Info graphic about the 3 systems. We made 2 drafts, got feedback, and worked extremely hard for 4 days to finish out info graphic. Collaboration is 2 or more people working together to finish a job.

I used creativity. An info graphic is educational, but also very appealing and visual. In Science class, Mrs. Winzeler showed the class a PPT about info graphics. There was 1 slide that had a really nice design. So Makalia and I made our info graphic using that slide. This slide kind of looked like a rollercoaster. The lines were curvy. Actually, there was only one line on the slide and it was a timeline. We used the same idea of lines and timelines, but we put our own spin onto it. We didn’t use curvy lines, or the same colors that were present on the slide. Since there were 3 systems, we decided to do 3 lines instead of one. Makalia and I loved the idea of the design, but we changed the idea so that we could make it our own. Creativity is making something that is your own or something that expresses you.
